Description:
Tibolone Acetate (Livial/Liviella) is used mainly for treatment of endometriosis, as well as hormone replacement
therapy in post-menopausal women. Tibolone Acetate is a synthetic steroid hormone drug, which is fairly non-
selective in its binding profile, acting as an agonist mainly at estrogen receptors, with a preference for ER alpha.
Tibolone Acetate has similar or greater efficacy compared to older hormone replacement drugs, but shares a
similar side effect profile. It has also been investigated as a possible treatment for female sexual dysfunction.
Application:

When estrogen levels are low tissues can slowly degenerate, as is experienced during menopause.
In addition,low levels of estrogen can cause distressing symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, mood swings,
reduced sex drive and vaginal dryness. Tibolone is broken down into three compounds which act in a similar way to
the natural estrogen and progesterone found in the body. It restores plasma endorphin level in post-menopausal
women and acts centrally to affect the thermo-regulatory system.
Function:
Tibolon has estrogenic effects on bone and vaginal tissue. The Δ4-isomer functions as a progestogen in
endometrial tissue, whereas in the brain and liver it has androgenic effects.In breast tissue,Tibolon acts by strongly
inhibiting sulfate activity and weak inhibition of 17α-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activity, which results in blocking
the conversion of estrone sulfate to E2.
Tibolon Contraindications;Tibolon is contraindicated in patients with the following conditions:,Women with hormone
hormone treated tumors,Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding,Pregnancy/lactation, Liver and/or cardiac disease.
Tibolon Adverse Drug Effects,Depression,Diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain, Visual
disturbances, Alteration in results of liver function tests,Excessive fluid retention in the body tissues resulting in
swelling (edema),weight changes, vaginal bleeding, pain in the muscles and joints,rashes or itching, Seborrhoeic
dermatitis,Headaches,dizziness, growth of facial hair.
Dosage:
1.Before you start taking the tablets, read the manufacturer's printed information leaflet from inside your back. The
manufacturer's leaflet will give you more information about tibolone and a full list of the side-effects which you
may experience from taking it.
2.Take one 2.5 mg tablet every day. You may take at whatever time of day you find easiest to remember, but try to
take your doses at the same time of day, each day. You can take the tablets before or after meals. You may find
it helps to swallow the tablet with a drink of water.
3.If you forget to take a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless you are more than 12 hours late.
If you are more than 12 hours late, leave out the forgotten dose and take your next tablet at the usual time. Do not
take two tablets together to make up for a missed dose.
